One of Weber's better offerings in a while. Pacing is improved from some of his more recent entries thanks to less political intrigue, political maneuvering and just plain politics- and less detail (what the less generous might call "minutiae"). The actual down and dirty action is pretty sparse, world long, long way from basilisk station and Brayson.Still, a solid entry in the honor verse, and if we miss Duchess stadholder Harrington we at least have agreeable companions in Victor, Anton & Thandi... although they show up less and do less in the final analysis. There also seems to be a serious lack of participation by characters who are rather prevalent in the first few chapters and vanish completely after an afterthought mention of them around the end of the first third of the book. For all intents and purposes, they only seem to exist to introduce the 'Sam Houston' archetype. I hate when that happens. Northern exposure was really bad about that, introducing characters or things and never mentioning them again after that episode. Seems that either Mr. Weber or Mr. Flint was a northern exposure fan.

I have read an re-read the first two books of what I hope is more than a trilogy, waiting for the sequel. I'm not sure if ebooks were even available, when I started the series. Anyway, this was well worth the wait. The writing is as wonderful and compelling as always.
All I want for Christmas is Book 4!!!
Continuation of the Crown of Slaves series that ties in with all the books in the Honor Harrington universe. This is a really, really good book with a really, really good story line and really really good characters. Am I using "really" too much??? LOL.
Weber and Flint have co-written multiple times together and seem to just click. Both are great writers but together, there seems to be a little extra, as if it's a competition to see who's better, but it turns out to be a productive competition. Very productive. I can't wait for the next book in this series, although I expect it will be a couple of years down the road, since both are so busy with their own projects.
Weber is starting to feel like a bad relationship, you slog through so much abuse for a few good moment, and then you keep coming back hoping it gets better. Continues the story. I will caution the authors I did finally give up and bail on the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan because it got so long, tedious and uninteresting I finally quit caring what happened or how the tale ended. I am heading that way with Weber...
This is the third in the Torch subseries and features as its main characters Anton Zilwicki and especially Victor Cachat and covers events up to and during The Mesan Alignment's evacuation from Mesa and the Civil War they incite to cover their tracks. Fewer lengthy monologues than Weber's usual, probably due to Eric Flint's influence, though I did find myself skipping through multiple paragraphs at one point. You'll also learn more about the bad guys behind the curtain in this one.
The ending is a bit contrived and the reader is left hanging. Events just stop in the middle of things due to a plot contrivance (no spoilers but REALLY?). It's a decent yarn and at the lower price is a good way to spend a few evenings.
By far my favorite of the sub-series. and one of my favorite Honor Harrington overall. You'll want to have read the earlier books first or you'll be totally lost, but if you've already come this far you will not be disappointed. Zilwicki continues to find connections no one else can see, Victor Cachet spins out some of his craziest make-this-up-as-we-go-along plans yet, and Thandi Palane does mayhem as only she can; having gone back to Mesa, even at their best they get in WAY over their heads.
Military action is on the ground this time, no space battles, but still with David Weber's flair, and Flint seems to help him minimize the datadumps that sometimes break up the flow in the main series. If you've read this far, don't stop now!
It has been more than 3 years since David Weber published Rising Thunder, the 12th Honor Harrington novel. But he and Eric Flint did publish Crown of Slaves in 2013 that tells us more about developments the Mesan Alignment and the planet Mesa. If we are lucky, Mr. Weber will resume the Harrington series in 2016. An early chapter shows that due to some unexpected reversals, the Alignment has to initiate the next major phase of its long-term plan before it is it wants to.
Anton Zilwicki, Manticore’s top spy, and Victor Cachet, Haven’s top spy, decide that they have to return to Mesa to find out more about the Mesan Alignment. It is the secret organization that destroyed a large portion of Manticore’s defense industry and manipulated the Solarian League into starting a war with Manticore. Mesa, of course, is also the home of Manpower, the company that runs the interstellar genetic slave trade.
Anton and Victor begin to suspect that the Alignment has initiated the next phase of its plan to literally conquer all of the human planets in the galaxy. And that phase has something to do with more terrorist attacks on Mesa that the Mesan government will blame them on the infamous but “innocent” Audubon Ballroom” a terrorist organization of ex-slaves that targets Manpower.
The tension builds steadily until the nerve wracking final 100 pages. There are a few paragraphs of things like history or data on charitable giving by income but these are forgivable in a 540 page novel. And there are clues here and there that suggest Manticore and Haven have a chance to thwart the Alignment’s next phase.
