Really quite a difficult book in massive need of editing especially in the first half as the author travels across the Mato Grosso in Brazil. The book improves as they launch their canoe on the tributaries of the Amazon. Landor writes about the fabulous landscapes, flora and fauna but it reads more like a map making survey than a travel account. With great editing this text could be salvaged and made more popular as it does provide information about a relatively unexplored region in the early 20th century and there are few sources for historians in this area.Product details

Across Unknown South America Arnold Henry Savage Landor 9781545335611 Books Reviews
I love a good a good historical story about safaris, exploration and wildlife stories. If that is your thing you will like this one as well
If you are expecting an exciting tale of high adventure and consuming interest then this is definitely NOT the book for you. It is the story of an Englishman's trek
across the bulk of Brazil along with 5 or 6 hired Brazilian lackeys whose intelligence and sense of honor are questionable, to say the least. The book is
interminably filled with climate, geological, and flora and fauna descriptions--to the point of being extremely tedious. If all this naturalist narrative
were excised from the book, it might be only 1/3 its current length. And that residual portion might, just might be of some interest. Metric and BES units are used
interchangably throughout which also takes away from the tale. (Keep in mind that 1.6 km = 1 mile). The story would likely be of more interest to a botanist/ geologist/zoologist than to a casual reader.
Hard to believe that one civilized man (who carried his money with him!) would not be robbed and murdered by the brutish men whom he had hired to accompany him. And giving them rifles and ammunition to boot!
